Getting started

What happens during a treatment intake?

Make the first conversation less unfamiliar, from your opening question to the next step.

General education and preparation prompts. Not a clinical assessment or a clinician-reviewed treatment guide.

START HERE

An inquiry, a clinical assessment, and an admission decision are different steps. Ask the provider to explain each one.

Start by finding out who you are speaking with

A first contact is a chance to ask about the service and its process. Before sharing a detailed history, ask whether you are speaking with admissions, a clinician, or a referral contact. Those roles can answer different questions. You can open with: ‘I’m considering treatment and would like to understand how your intake works.’ That is enough to begin.

  • Who will respond to this inquiry?
  • Is this an information call, an assessment, or both?
  • How is the information I share recorded and used?

Let a qualified professional assess care needs

An addiction assessment can consider substance use together with physical, mental, and social circumstances. The CCSA guide describes assessment as the basis for planning appropriate care. Karl’s email conversation does not replace that assessment.

  • Who carries out the clinical assessment?
  • What should I prepare, and how should I share it securely?
  • If this program is not appropriate, what would the next step be?

Separate learning about care from committing to it

Ask for the practical details in a form you can refer back to. A verbal description may leave you with questions after the conversation ends. If there is something you do not understand, ask for an explanation before agreeing to a payment or admission arrangement.

  • What are the next steps and who will contact me?
  • What availability has actually been confirmed?
  • What costs and cancellation terms would apply?
  • May I include a support person, and what consent is needed?

If you start with Karl

You can request an email using only your email address and an optional first name. Karl can explain the ART referral route and help you prepare questions. If you choose an introduction, agree what will be shared. ART handles assessment, program suitability, pricing, and coverage verification. You can also approach ART directly or explore other services.

Program details and access arrangements can change. Confirm them directly with the provider. These sources inform the guide; their inclusion does not imply endorsement of Karl or ART.

A question is enough.

Ask Karl about the ART referral process by email. No medical history is needed in your contact request.
