Planning ahead

A practical checklist before entering treatment

Prepare questions about arrival, daily life, costs, and support after the program.

START HERE

Ask the provider for its own current instructions. This checklist helps you organize questions; it is not an admission or packing policy.

Before choosing an arrival date

Create one place to keep the answers you receive, such as a paper folder or a private document. Mark which details are confirmed and which still need an answer. Do not assume that an inquiry has reserved a place.

  • Have I received the assessment and admission instructions?
  • Who should I contact if my situation changes before arrival?
  • What date, address, arrival time, and transport arrangements are confirmed?
  • What documents should go directly to intake, and by which method?

Ask what everyday life would involve

Request an example schedule from the actual program. Treat it as a starting point for questions rather than a guarantee that every day will be identical.

  • What is a typical day like, including appointments and free time?
  • What are the rules for phones, internet, visitors, and contact with family?
  • What items should I bring, and what should stay home?
  • How should prescribed medications be brought and managed? Follow the prescriber’s advice; do not change medication to prepare for admission.

Plan the practical responsibilities

You may have arrangements to make for pets, transport, bills, children, or someone you support. Write down the tasks that apply to you and decide whom you want involved. If work or benefits are involved, ask the appropriate workplace or benefits contact what information and documentation they need. Karl does not make employment or benefits decisions.

  • What is the confirmed total cost and payment schedule?
  • Which responsibilities need attention while I’m away?
  • Whom do I want involved, and what do I agree can be shared?

Ask about the time after treatment

The CCSA guide includes continuing care as part of recovery support. Ask the provider to explain its actual arrangements rather than relying on a general promise of aftercare.

  • What follow-up is included and for how long?
  • Who arranges the next appointments or connections?
  • What support is available to my family?
  • Whom can I contact if the plan needs to change?
