You can ask for support while you are still deciding what change might look like. If dependence may be present, get medical advice before stopping suddenly.
Start with the question you already have
You may be thinking about your drinking because of time, money, relationships, work, or how you feel. You do not have to complete an online test before speaking with a healthcare professional. Health Canada explains that people can seek help with substance use without already having an addiction diagnosis.
Keep the first change medically safe
Withdrawal from alcohol can be dangerous, including potentially life-threatening symptoms. If you may be physically dependent, seek medical advice before abruptly stopping. This page cannot determine your risk or provide a home withdrawal plan. In an emergency, call 911.

Make a few private notes for a healthcare appointment
These prompts are for your own preparation. They are not a score or diagnosis, and there is no box on this website to submit your answers. Share relevant health information directly with the professional assessing you.
- What has made me think about changing my drinking now?
- What does a usual week look like, and what happens when that changes?
- What have I noticed when I drink less or stop?
- What would I most like help understanding?
- What other medicines, substances, or health concerns should the clinician know about?
Ask what support fits your circumstances
Treatment can include different combinations of medical and psychological support, and care can take place in different settings. A professional can discuss the options relevant to you. A residential program is one possibility, not a conclusion this website can make.

- What should happen first in my situation?
- What can I access locally, and what requires a referral?
- What is available while I consider the longer-term options?
